What is the CISMP?
URM’s BCS Certificate in Information Security Management Principles (CISMP) training course is designed to provide you with a strong understanding of what good practice information security consists of, and the practical skills necessary to effectively manage information and cyber security. The CISMP is an industry-recognised certificate and represents the ideal basis for launching and developing a career in information security, and URM’s course will fully prepare you for the examination.
The course is well suited to any professional whose role involves, or will involve, managing and protection sensitive information. There are no mandatory prerequisites for attendance, although the BCS recommends you have a working knowledge of IT and the basic principles of information technology and security.
URM’s CISMP course has been updated in line with the changes made to the BCS syllabus in 2020.
How is the Course Delivered?
URM’s CDP course has been designed with a dynamic, interactive approach with the aim of encouraging debate and the sharing of knowledge and experience. The course centres around discussions, exercises, and real-life scenarios, which will bolster your understanding of some of the more challenging concepts and prepare you for applying them when you return to your work environment.
Delegates are provided with a hard copy of the BCS Information Security Management Principles book as a revision tool and URM’s trainer will facilitate mock exams each day, effectively preparing you to take and pass the BCS administered exam.
BCS recommends at least 18 hours of tuition spread over 3 or more days. Taking feedback from our delegates, URM has chosen to deliver the course over 24 hours. We strongly believe that the extra hours are necessary to facilitate classroom discussion, the sharing of experiences, and explanation of how the central principles can be applied in the workplace.
Online Instructor-led Training
URM’s online CISMP course is delivered across 6 mornings, from 9am – approximately 12:45pm. Due to the intensity of the course, we have decided to deliver it across mornings only as full days via MS Teams can be challenging. This will enable you to review material or return to work in the afternoon.
The trainer will provide you with some homework, such as a mock exam, review of topics you have covered that day, additional reading or an exercise. The following morning, you will have the opportunity to review your homework and ask any questions it has raised.
In-person Training
URM’s classroom-based CISMP courses are held across 4 days, from 9am – approximately 5pm. You will have many opportunities to raise queries and discuss the course with URM’s trainer outside of these hours.
Our public scheduled classroom courses are held at purpose-built training venues and are usually residential.

What Changes Were Made by BCS in 2020?
Since its introduction in 1999, the BCS CISMP syllabus has been regularly updated, with the last update (v9.0) taking place in September 2020. Much of the syllabus remained unaltered from the 2017 version, however, a new section was included to cover security lifecycle both from an information and design process perspective.
The new section also addresses risks to security brought about by systems development and support. BCS’ new syllabus has much more emphasis on cyber security, the security framework (e.g. implementation of information security) and better reflects current working practices.
